One of wood siding's biggest advantages is that isolated damage can often be repaired one board at a time without replacing the entire wall. That's why a wood siding problem can sometimes be smaller than it looks.
Unlike lower-maintenance siding materials, wood requires ongoing coating maintenance. Paint or stain helps protect the wood from moisture, and once that protective finish begins to fail, exposed wood can become vulnerable to swelling, cracking, peeling, and eventually rot.

The bottom edges of wood siding are especially vulnerable when they stay wet or can't dry properly. If the rot is limited to a few boards and the sheathing behind them is still sound, those boards can often be removed and replaced without replacing the rest of the wall.

If the problem is limited to a few boards, they can often be replaced individually. Widespread movement may point to a larger moisture or installation issue that should be addressed first.

Substrate is the question
Peeling or blistering paint doesn't automatically mean the siding needs to be replaced. The first step is checking the condition of the wood underneath and looking for the source of any excess moisture. Board or whole wall
Usually, yes. One of the advantages of wood siding is that localized damage can often be repaired by removing and replacing individual boards rather than replacing the entire wall. Whether that's the best option depends on how widespread the damage is, the condition of the sheathing behind the siding, and whether a compatible replacement board is available.
New replacement boards may not look exactly like siding that has weathered for years. Differences in age, wood grain, previous coatings, sun exposure, and weathering can all affect the finished appearance.
Before recommending a board-for-board repair, we look at more than whether a replacement board will physically fit. Profile, texture, age, and the existing finish all affect how well the repair will blend. If we expect the new material to remain noticeable, we'll discuss that with you before recommending the repair.
We won't install a repair that we know is likely to stand out without discussing it with you first. If matching the existing wood siding, texture, or finish is going to be difficult, we'll explain that before the work begins and walk you through the available options.

Material comparison
All four can be good siding options depending on the home, budget, appearance, and level of maintenance you're comfortable with. Wood offers authentic grain and strong repairability, while engineered wood, fiber cement, and vinyl offer different tradeoffs in maintenance, durability, and cost. We don't push one material for every home.
Homeowners often keep wood siding because they like the appearance and character of real wood, especially on older or architecturally distinctive homes. Wood can also be repaired in relatively small sections when deterioration is localized and compatible material is available.
The tradeoff is maintenance. Wood siding needs to be kept properly coated and protected from prolonged moisture exposure to help prevent deterioration and rot.
Fiber cement is a good option for homeowners who like the look of painted siding but want less maintenance than traditional wood. It resists rot and insect damage, holds up well over time, and can be repainted when you want to change the look of the home.

Local conditions
Southwest Ohio puts wood siding through changing conditions all year. Rain, humidity, summer sun, winter temperatures, and repeated wet-dry cycles can all take a toll, especially when paint or stain begins to fail and the wood is exposed to moisture.
The most vulnerable areas are often places where water collects or the wood dries slowly, including lower courses, areas around windows and doors, and poorly flashed or maintained details. Keeping wood siding properly coated and addressing small problems early can help prevent localized damage from turning into widespread rot.

Process
Our process starts by determining how much of the siding is actually damaged, then addressing the conditions behind it before the new siding goes on.
Removing damaged wood siding gives us a chance to see what was happening behind it. We look at the sheathing, house wrap, flashing, and surrounding wall for signs that moisture has traveled beyond the siding itself.
Finding deterioration behind the siding doesn't automatically mean the entire wall needs to be replaced. The goal is to determine how far the problem extends, repair what's actually damaged, and correct the condition that contributed to it before covering the wall back up.

There is no honest single number, and any contractor who gives you one is guessing. Wood siding is a maintained product rather than a product with a service life: kept sealed, it lasts a very long time. Left unsealed, the same boards can be soft within a few seasons. What decides it is whether the finish is renewed before the film fails, and whether water is getting behind the boards at grade and below the windows — not the age of the wood.
Yes, and it is the most common wood siding job we do. Each board is fastened on its own rather than interlocking with the courses above and below, so a failed board can come out and a new one go in without disturbing sound siding around it. Two things decide whether it is straightforward: whether your profile is still being milled, and whether the sheathing behind the board is dry.
Press it. Sound wood resists; decayed wood gives, and a screwdriver tip will sink into it with almost no effort. Discoloration on its own is not proof, and neither is a rough surface — both can be weathering on wood that is still structurally fine. The reverse is also true: a board that looks acceptable under fresh paint can be soft underneath, which is why we probe rather than eyeball. Check the bottom course first, then directly under every window.
Uneven moisture. When one face of a board takes on water and the other cannot, the wet side swells more, and the board curls away from the wall. It is most common on boards that were never sealed on the hidden face, on south- and west-facing walls that dry fast on the outside, and on flat-sawn boards where the grain direction makes the movement worse. A cupped board does not flatten back once it has dried, and it pulls on the fasteners either side of it.
Often, yes — if the wood under the finish is sound. That is the whole question, and it is not answerable from a photograph. Where the paint is failing in patches on solid boards, preparation and refinishing is the right call. Where paint is lifting across a whole elevation, it usually means moisture is reaching the back of the boards, and a new coat on wet wood will fail the same way. We probe first and tell you which of the two you have.
They are good at different things. Cedar has natural resistance to decay and insects, takes a stain beautifully, and gives you real grain rather than a reproduction of it. Engineered wood — wood fiber bonded with resin and treated in manufacture — comes in longer lengths with fewer joints, is more dimensionally stable, and costs less to buy. Cedar suits a home where the material is part of the architecture. Engineered wood suits a homeowner who wants the wood look with less movement to manage. Both still need a maintained finish.
The cost of wood siding replacement depends heavily on whether you’re replacing a few damaged boards, one section of the home, or the siding across the entire house. The type of wood, availability of a matching profile, condition of the sheathing underneath, trim and flashing work, and accessibility can also affect the final price.

Wood is a food source and a nesting material in a way that fiber cement and vinyl are not, so yes, it carries an exposure the alternatives do not. In practice the problem follows moisture: carpenter ants and termites are drawn to wood that is already damp or decayed, and boring insects find soft boards first. Cedar has some natural resistance and engineered products are treated in manufacture, but neither is immune. Keeping the finish sound and keeping soil, mulch, and vegetation off the bottom course does more than the species choice does.
As a general rule, painted wood siding may need repainting about every 5–10 years, while stained wood siding may need refinishing about every 3–7 years. The actual timing depends on the coating used, surface preparation, sun exposure, moisture, and the condition of the wood.
Don’t rely on the calendar alone. If the finish begins peeling, cracking, fading significantly, or exposing bare wood, it’s time to address it. Areas that receive more sun, wind-driven rain, or moisture may need attention sooner than more protected parts of the home.
Yes, wood siding can often be repaired or replaced during the winter. The main limitation is usually the finishing work, since paints, stains, caulks, and other products have minimum application temperatures and weather requirements.
When conditions aren’t suitable for a particular coating or finish, we’ll explain what work can be completed safely and whether any finishing needs to wait for appropriate weather. We follow the application requirements for the products being used rather than applying them in conditions that could affect their performance.
