James Hardie publishes detailed installation requirements — clearances, fastening, flashing and joint treatment. They exist because fiber cement behaves differently from vinyl and wood, and because the way a board is fixed and drained decides how long the wall lasts.

Almost none of those requirements are visible on a finished wall. That is exactly why they get skipped.

The clearances most installations get wrong

Four requirements decide whether a fiber cement wall lasts. None of them are visible once the job is finished. Select one to see what it is and what happens without it.

CLEARANCE TO GRADE CLEARANCE TO ROOF JOINT FLASHING BLIND NAILING

Published requirement
Clearance to finished grade. James Hardie calls for a minimum 6 in. clearance between its products and finished grade in the US. Fiber cement wicks moisture out of standing contact with soil or mulch, and this is the most commonly violated requirement on the list. Where a bed or a regraded lawn has crept up the wall, that gets solved before the siding goes on, not after.

Published requirement
Clearance above a roof surface. Where a wall meets a lower roof, the bottom edge of the siding is held clear of the roof surface and the intersection is flashed. The published figure differs between product lines and instruction revisions, so we work to the clearance in the current instruction for the product being installed rather than to a rule of thumb. Without the gap, snow and standing water sit against the bottom edge all winter.

Joint flashing at butt joints. James Hardie lists three permitted butt-joint treatments — joint flashing, caulking, or an H-jointer cover — and names joint flashing as the one it recommends. We use flashing. It is slower and it costs more, and it is not caulked over afterwards. The caulked joint is the one that opens up after a few Ohio winters.

Blind nailing in the nailing zone. Blind nailing is James Hardie’s preferred method for HardiePlank lap siding: each fastener sits in the nailing zone near the top of the plank and is covered by the course above. Face nailing through the exposed face is quicker, and Hardie limits it to where code requires it in high-wind areas. On a finished wall the difference shows as dimpling and exposed fastener heads.

Climate zone

Why Ohio needs HZ5 product

James Hardie manufactures to climate zone. Put a Dayton ZIP code into the manufacturer’s own Hardie Zone lookup and it returns HZ5 — the northern zone. HZ10 is the hot, humid and coastal formulation. Same brand, different formulation and finish system.

Specifying the wrong zone product is not a visible error on delivery day. It becomes visible several winters later, in the finish and at the edges.

It is a small thing to get right and an expensive thing to get wrong, so we confirm the zone on the order rather than assuming it.

LAP / ELEVATION

HardiePlank® Lap Siding

The horizontal lap board most people picture when they picture fiber cement. It goes on course over course, each board overlapping the one below, with the fasteners placed in the nailing zone near the top edge and covered by the next course.

It is the product the blind-nailing requirement is written for, and the one where a face-nailed wall is easiest to spot afterwards.

PANEL AND BATTEN

HardiePanel® Vertical Siding

Large-format vertical sheets. Used on their own for a flat modern elevation, or with HardieTrim battens over the joints for a board-and-batten look.

Panels change where the joints fall, so the flashing plan is different from a lap wall. It is worth deciding this before the tear-off, not during it.

SHINGLE / STAGGERED

HardieShingle® Siding

Shingle-look fiber cement, available as individual shingles and as panels that carry several shingles at once. Most often used on gables, dormers and accent elevations rather than a whole house.

Mixing shingle above and lap below is a common Dayton elevation, and the transition between the two is a detail worth drawing before it is built.

TRIM / SURROUND

HardieTrim® Boards

Fiber cement trim for corners, window and door surrounds, frieze and rake boards. Using it means the trim weathers at the same rate as the siding instead of ageing on its own schedule.

Trim is also where the flashing gets decided. Head flashing over openings is not optional, and it is a detail we will show you on your own elevations.

James Hardie publishes its own product warranties on fiber cement, and we will point you to the current terms for the product you choose rather than paraphrase them. What we will say from experience is that the boards are rarely the limiting factor. The walls that fail early are the ones where clearances, flashing or fastening were skipped, which is why this page is about installation rather than about the material.

It depends on the house and on how long you plan to stay in it. Fiber cement costs more up front and buys impact and fire resistance, a heavier and more dimensional look, and a painted finish. Vinyl costs less and performs well in Ohio when it is installed correctly. We install both, so we will give you the comparison for your own elevations instead of a default answer.

James Hardie manufactures to climate zone rather than making one product for the whole country. Its own zone lookup returns HZ5 for Dayton ZIP codes. HZ5 is the northern zone, engineered for freezing temperatures, extreme seasonal temperature variation, and snow and ice. HZ10 is the hot, humid and coastal formulation. It is the requirement missed most often, usually because a bed or a regraded lawn has crept up the wall since the last siding job. Where that has happened, the ground is dealt with before the siding goes on rather than after.

James Hardie permits three butt-joint treatments, joint flashing, caulking, or an H-jointer cover, and names joint flashing as the one it recommends. We use flashing. It takes longer, it costs more, and it is not caulked over afterwards. A caulked butt joint is a maintenance item that starts opening after a few freeze-thaw cycles.

Fastening each board through the nailing zone near its top edge so that the course above covers the fastener. James Hardie names it the preferred method for HardiePlank lap siding and limits face nailing to where code requires it in high-wind areas. A face-nailed wall shows dimples and fastener heads across the elevation, and it is one of the easiest shortcuts to spot from the driveway.

Yes. Fiber cement takes paint well and repainting is one of the ordinary maintenance items on a fiber cement wall. If you are weighing a factory finish against a site-applied one, that is a conversation worth having at the estimate rather than afterwards, because it changes the product you order.

Fiber cement handles freeze-thaw well, which is the reason James Hardie makes a northern zone product at all. Cracking that does appear is usually mechanical rather than climatic: a board fastened too close to an edge, a butt joint forced into place, or a bottom edge sitting in water because a clearance was not held.

We do not publish figures, because the drivers vary too much between houses. What moves the number: total square footage and how many elevations, how much trim the house carries, whether the sheathing needs repair once the old siding is off, access and storey height, whether clearances at grade or at a roof need work first, and the product and finish you choose. All of it goes into a written estimate.

It depends on the size of the house, how much trim there is, what the sheathing looks like once the old siding is off, and the weather. Rather than give a generic answer, we put a date range in the written estimate and tell you promptly if it moves.

Our default is a full tear-off. Taking the old siding off is the only way to see the sheathing and the weather-resistant barrier behind it, and those are the parts that decide how the new wall performs. If someone proposes going over the top, ask what happens to the clearances and to the flashing at the openings.

Considerably heavier. That changes handling, cutting, fastening and how many people are needed on the wall, which is part of why fiber cement labour costs more than vinyl. It does not normally call for structural work on a typical Dayton house, but it does call for a crew set up for it.

Yes. Cutting fiber cement needs the right blade and proper dust control, and the fastening pattern is not the same as vinyl. It is one of the practical reasons a crew that mostly installs vinyl tends to produce a different result on a fiber cement wall.
